C District – Kirkby Stephen – Shearling Rams Day 2

Day 2 of the C District Ram sales saw 464 shearling rams on offer, with a lead call late on the first day from the familiar names of Patrick and Kirsty Sowerby, Oakbank. It was their first tup, a son of the £21,000 Michael Watson, which attracted the attention. His mother was a ewe that Patrick had shown successfully, by a Bull & Cave tup which has proved to be a great sire over the years. He was purchased in a half share between Mark Nelson, Bull & Cave and Paul & Sue Hallam, High Birkwith for £35,000.

Next selling at £26,000 was Grayrigg Hall JD9, a son of a £42,000 Stainton tup, and out of a ewe by a Harkerside tup, which goes back to the Eric Coates. He sold to brothers Stan and James Harker, Murton Hall, Appleby.

Early on the Thursday saw the noted Helbeck flock through the ring. Thomas sold a pair of twins by the homebred Unique, out of a ewe by Napoleon which Thomas has shown several times. It was the bigger of the twins, Brownber Rambo, which took the top price, selling for £25,000 to Stephen Clarkson, Christine Clarkson, Graham Scarr and Thomas Iveson.

There was a wonderful show of strong well bred rams forward which ensured an overall sale average of £2354 for 326 rams sold, an increase of £589 on the year giving an 88% clearance.
